What is Diabetes?

Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is a long-term metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) over an extended period. It occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (Type 1 diabetes) or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2 diabetes and other forms). Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates glucose (sugar) levels in the blood, enabling cells to use glucose for energy.
